Recently, Punjabi singer Rajvir Jawanda tragically lost his life in an accident involving two stray cows. Stray cows pose a serious problem in India, with recent surveys estimating about 5 million roaming freely across the country. Despite numerous North Indian states collecting cow cess to keep these animals off the roads, the highly sensitive nature of cow politics prevents open discussion on the issue. Every day, hundreds of lives are lost due to these animals. Meanwhile, the government collects special taxes for stray cow management funds, which are rarely used to improve road safety for motorists.
